Track Day HPDE Gear
So you own this street beast of a car? It's a blast driving around town and heads often turn as you rumble past unsuspecting motorists. The reality is, what you really have is a race car with State issued metal tags and a few interior comforts. Race cars don't like traffic jams, stop lights or speed limits and you start to feel a responsibility to provide a more complete life for your pride and joy. You've done a little research and there is this amazing thing called a Track Day or High Performance Driving Experience (HPDE). For a few hundred bucks, your street/race car can be unleashed to run free and wide open on some of the USA's most famous racing circuits! So you sign up for the next event, wake up early on Saturday morning, fire up the street beast and head out to the race track. The group that will host your Track Days are typically knowledgeable, informative and safety conscious. They want to dramatically improve your driving skills, but they don't want you calling the insurance company, trying to explain the incident with the guardrail happened on Turn 11, not Highway 11. Even more importantly, they want you to have a fantastic time, drive home and come back to do it all over again. So, check the rules beforehand, the helmet leftover from your motorcycle days or the 49 dollar WalMart Special may not be permitted. Groups that host Track Day/HPDE events are now requiring a specific type of Helmet that is designed and tested for auto racing. These type Helmets are certified as Snell SA2020. Even though you technically won't be racing with other drivers, straightaway and corner speeds often exceed what many classes of purpose built race cars can achieve on that particular track.
