What does SFI 3.2A/1 or SFI 3.2A/5 mean? Auto Racing Suit manufacturers submit test samples to the SFI Foundation in order to gain the certification.
Although construction materials vary by manufacturer, SFI Auto Racing Suits utilize a variety of fabrics to achieve the protection level. The higher end, lighter weight Racing Suits are constructed from Nomex® or similar Aramidic fabrics. The more affordable Racing Suits are constructed from a treated cotton fabric, such as Pyrovatex® or Proban®.
SFI 3.2A/1 Race Suits are constructed from 1 layer of flame retardant fabric.
SFI 3.2A/5 Race Suits are constructed from 2 or more layers of flame retardant fabric, therefore, providing greater protection.
